TB ADVOCACY ACTION ALERT!
***********************************************************************
Stop TB USA was formerly known as the National Coalition for
Elimination of Tuberculosis (NCET). Please pass this information
on to your colleagues who are interested in TB elimination.
***********************************************************************
We have been asked to pass on this ACTION ALERT update
from Nuala Moore of Stop TB USA Partner, the American Thoracic
Society:
*******************************************
The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a resolution
commemorating World TB Day on Wednesday. The resolution documents
the current global TB pandemic, including research needs, describes
the progress made by anti-TB programs at CDC, NIH, USAID and
the Global Fund and reaffirms the House's commitment to global
TB made through the Lantos-Hyde PEPFAR reauthorization, passed
2 years ago. The resolution, H. Res. 1155, is scheduled to come
to the floor for an expedited vote under rules for noncontroversial
legislation, so it has a good chance of quick passage. Despite
this, TB advocates should contact their House Representatives
to urge a "Yes" vote on H. Res 1155. The text of the
resolution is attached.
Contact Your House Representative
To contact your Representative, call 1-202-224-3121 and ask for
your Representative's office or give your zip code if you don't
know their name. When connected, ask for the Legislative Assistant
for Foreign Affairs. It is fine to leave a voicemail messages
for this person. Sample message: "I am a healthcare provider/constituent
from (your town) and I am calling to urge Rep. ___ to vote for
H.Res 1155, to commend progress made by anti-tuberculosis programs
at the CDC, NIH, USAID and Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and
Malaria. This resolution recognizes that TB is the world's second
leading infectious disease killer and that the US must lead on
global TB control, as authorized under the Lantos-Hyde Act passed
2 years ago. Thank you."

TB ADVOCACY ALERTS!
3/26/10 TB ADVOCACY UPDATE!
1. March 2010 - President Obama released his
FY2011 proposed budget for all federal programs on February 1.
The budget recommends $143 million for CDC's domestic TB program,
a proposed $1.2 million cut, targeted to come from travel expenses.
Congress will begin drafting the FY2011 health spending bill,
which includes TB funding, in April, beginning with the House
Labor-HHS (Health and Human Services) Appropriations subcommittee,
chaired by Rep. Obey (D-WI). The House Appropriations subcommittees
are expected to begin voting on spending bills in June.
2.Congress passed
the bipartisan Comprehensive TB Elimination Act in October 2008.
This new law recommended a funding level of $220 million for
CDC's domestic TB program in FY2011. TB advocates must educate
their members of Congress, particularly members of the House
and Senate Labor-HHS subcommittees, about this funding level
and the reasons why TB programs needs this increased funding.
